The low kick is a very common attack, and is a basic component of any Muay Thai fighters toolbox. A low kick is performed by moving the leg in a circular motion towards the thigh of the opponent, or his shin removing the opponents balance and ability to defend. If the opponent is careless and leave the low kick free to contact him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the fight will usually end soon after. Such is the usefulness of this kick. After landing a couple of low kicks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the opponents lower leg will be bruised and unable to function well.
Muay Thai fighters train hard, day and night to achieve this sort of power. The drills can be intense and exhausting. Coupled with this fight conditioning is the ceaseless attempts to harden the shins, elbows, and knees. Fighters who have trained from a very young age often have the ability to withstand great damage to their bodies, while dealing out twice as much,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the power of their shin strikes have been known to crack trees and bend steel poles.
Another aspect of these techniques is most strikes involve movements of the whole body. Whatever action the Muay Thai fighter initiates, professional fighters will turn hips, move through the space provided to them, and throw their whole body through the opponent when punching. This is true for defending as well. Although slower in some regards,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], these techniques will deal more damage, this is why it is favored in many MMA competitions.
Many other martial arts have certain types of kicks called "snap kicks". These strikes, while faster to execute,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have a great deal less power than the roundhouse kick. This is because the hardened shin is many times harder than the soft underbelly of the foot. Many fighters favor their kicks over fist strikes, but they always keep a balance and use them when appropriate.
If you want to know more about mastering Muay Thai, visit Peak Performance Martial Arts [ now.
If you are committed to learning a martial art, not just for sport, but for self defense Muay Thai is definitely an option. Fighters are strong, fit athletes with enough power to command respect in any fight or competition.
A roundhouse kick can be quite brutal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but many people find it difficult to execute properly. With this kick,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the front leg is kept straight and the power comes from the thrust of the body weight forward and into the striking leg. The body pivots on the front foot and turns through the hip. With this kick, the shin is often referred to as the sword of the fighter. Many Muay Thai fighters spend hours hardening their shins in order to maximize the damage they are able to deal.
When an opponent gets in too close, or is within range,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a Muay Thai fighters first instinct should be to clinch and close the gap. This is often followed up with a variety of knees and kicks against the opponents body. A good fighter will focus on clinching in order to take the opponents ability to move on their feet away, all the while landing blows on their head,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ribs, arm, or legs. While often seen as a brutal weapon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], knees can be deadly effective. This is especially true when they are used in combination with elbows and strikes with the fist.
It might look a lot more impressive to see huge roundhouse kicks slicing through the air and into an opponent, but true Muay Thai fighters know that elbows and knees do much more effective damage in a shorter amount of time. Skill and power within a fighters strikes will enable them to quickly and easily execute techniques and remove the threat any opponent poses. Like all martial arts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when they become popularized,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], certain techniques tend to get the most attention. Muay Thai is no different. In particular the low and roundhouse kicks have reached many peoples attention.

What is Emotional Intelligence?
Children Learn Best By What We Do
"What can you do next time so that you do not have to hit your sister and feel bad?" He was able to articulate: "balloon breath (deep breathing) ... count to ten.... go to my room till I calm down" ... "use my words".
First, realize that although each of these children are all bright, (have at least average or above IQ's) they have not developed the emotional skills necessary for success in such life situations. These skills, many of which we often take for granted, thankfully can be taught, and have most recently been coined emotional intelligence (EQ) by Daniel Goleman in his best-selling book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.
We are all role models for our children; we all have a responsibility. Every time we interact with a child we have the opportunity to teach and model emotional intelligence and health,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Children learn by what they see us do; our well-intentioned words must be backed up by our actions.
Your nine year old is teased at school for being the new kid in class, or being too fat, or answering correctly one too many times, and tells you he wants to run away or kill himself. Your six year old feels humiliated at soccer practice cause she can't kick the ball as well as the other girls (never mind they had a year more practice) and wants to quit. Your four year old’s preschool teacher complains to you about your son being too aggressive with the other kids. And your oldest teen girl gets a D on her last history exam and you find she seems to have given up studying and instead is sleeping and smoking pot most of her free time. What does this all mean and what is a parent of a supposedly "smart" child to do?
Social Skills: handling emotions in relationships and interacting harmoniously with others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including being sensitive to others needs and wants, being able to listen to and soothe others feelings, and developing what is considered good "people skills".
How To Get It
How to Test EQ
Here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in a simplified form appropriate to his age, he demonstrates excellent anger management by calming down using relaxation and distraction techniques,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and not responding to his first impulse to hit. When asked what would help him get along better with his sister,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he responded "Not blaming her for things I do." The next time a similar incident occurred, a gentle reminder from his parent on how he decided he wanted to calmly handle the situation, assisted and empowered him to keep on track with his developing emotional intelligence.
To understand how to develop emotional intelligence, we'll take a look at anger management, one of the most important skills for our children (and us) to master. Goleman cites research that shows many children who are aggressive and hard to handle in the first and second grades tend to have a five-fold increase in truancy, drinking, drug taking, dropping-out and petty crime in their high school years.
"Would you like to feel better?" - "Yes".
The good news is that we have the power to change and grow - both in our actions and in helping our children develop competent emotional skills. Consider a six-year old boy who's been having alot of trouble getting along with his younger three year old sister,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and who initially had difficulty expressing his feelings. With some simple training and direction he was able to develop a repertoire of positive coping skills and resolve his dilemma.
Emotional intelligence was first described by Peter Salovey and John Mayer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], two Yale University psychologists in 1990. Emotional intelligence refers to five main emotional competency areas. Notice where your children's strengths and weaknesses are.
"How did you feel when you hit your sister?" - "Bad"
One mother had a startling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], simple revelation recently. She relayed a typical incident of her two children (brother and sister) beginning to escalate their differences into shouting and perhaps hitting. She was about to scream at them (certain to escalate the situation even more) when she remembered to stop, breathe, and count to ten before reacting. This mom surprised herself (she really wanted to get angry and "act-out") and something miraculous happened. As she was calming herself down, using deep breathing and self-talk, her kids began to follow her lead. They too, stopped yelling, breathed, and counted to ten. At that point they were able to talk through their problem and come up with a creative solution that satisfied and pleased everyone. What a learning experience - it finally clicked in - for her and for her kids!
Emotional self-awareness: recognizing, naming, and understanding the cause of one's feelings. For example, a child being able to not only identify feeling "bad" but angry, hurt, jealous,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], upset, sad, or scared in various life situations.
Intellectual ability is not enough. As Goleman points out, IQ and SAT scores do not predict who will be successful in life (IQ at best contributes about 20 percent). Even school success has been predicted more by emotional and social measures (e.g.: being self-assured and interested, following directions, turning to teachers for help, and expressing needs while getting along with other children) than by academic ability.
Who Is Responsible?
As Goleman reminds us, "parents can help their children by coaching them emotionally, talking to them about their feelings and how to understand them, not being critical and judgmental, problem solving about emotional predicaments, coaching them on what do, like alternatives to hitting, or to withdrawing when your sad". And, when they (and we) make mistakes (as can be expected), we can teach our children how to handle a future situation more productively. Not unexpectedly, studies indicate the more parents are emotionally adept, the more their children are.
Handling emotions appropriately: demonstrating productive options for managing stress and upsetting feelings rather than "acting-out" negatively such as using words rather than fists to express anger.
Think about the last time your child exploded in anger. When his sister grabbed the remote control and changed the TV station? When her younger brother burst into her room and bothered her friends? How did you react? With calm reason or did you explode back? If we lose control when our children do, what are we really teaching them?
Clearly, education at all levels is warranted. There even seems to be a special part of our brain for such skills as emotional self-control and empathetic understanding which continues to develop into late adolescence (16-18 years). Emotional habits acquired in childhood appear harder to change later in life, leading to a critical window of opportunity to help shape lifelong emotional propensities. Classes to raise the social and emotional competence in children are being taught all over the country at all grade levels under such titles as "social development", "life skills", "self science", "conflict resolution", and "emotional literacy". More are needed.
Self-motivation: thinking, planning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and solving problems by using impulse control, frustration tolerance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and delayed gratification to reach a specific goal (e.g.: no TV until homework is completed); and maintaining hope and optimism, trying again despite setbacks (e.g.: a poor grade on a test leads to studying more, not less).
Although there is no specific paper and pencil test to measure you child's EQ, just ask your 4,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 6, 9, or 14 year old how they would handle the situations of our troubled friends at the opening of this article. Better yet, gather a group of your children's friends and pose these and other similar home-grown situations to open up creative brainstorming sessions. Who knows, you might be helping your child and their friends develop into healthy, happier, more productive adults.
Empathy: recognizing and understanding emotions in others. If one child is able to care about how another is feeling, teasing or picking fights with unsuspecting victims can be drastically reduced.
The concept of emotional intelligence is to be applauded. Not because it is totally new, (you may recognize some aspects from previous ideas) but because it captures in one compelling term, the essence of what our children need to know to be productive and happy.
Teachers might say parents are responsible for such social competence. Parents might say it is in the schools where children can best learn to get along with other children and develop social skills. Who is responsible? WE ALL ARE. With the devastating high rise of juvenile crime, depression, suicide, drug use, eating disorders, and pregnancy, we seem to have a generation of emotionally disabled youngsters and everyone must become involved to help turn the tide.

Kids grieve differently. I first began to understand this as I drove between my home hospice families in rural Georgia. I delivered end of life care, symptom management, and, especially,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I "pronounced" the hospice patients who died on my watch. Adults often cry, become angry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or find solace in faith. But the children behaved differently. As I sat with one little girl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], waiting for the funeral home transortation, she lamented, "Look at those kids! They are playing ball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eating sandwiches, like nothing has happened! They don't even miss Gran."
3. MEDITATIVE HEALING. Yoga is based on a philosophy of balance or harmony of body, mind and spirit. Yoga teaches kids that they can choose a thought that will effect behavior, such entertaining a grateful, happy or funny memory that will lead them to a positive mindset.
WHY IS YOGA SUCH A PERFECT FIT?
My little friend was the exception. Her siblings were exhibiting normal childhood behavior. Kids have diffficulty processing the unfamiliar feelings of grief. And the unfathomable idea that, one day, they too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will cease existence as we know it. So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],they resort to another more comforting activity, to avoid the unbearable reality of their mortality.
Kids feel intensley, but these emotions are so unfamiliar, they have difficulty processing them. I have learned a great deal by asking my adult friends about their childhood grief memories.

Affirmations of acceptance, forgiveness, loving self care and kindness give the child here and now tools to manage this very human condition of suffering his inevidible losses in life.
1. KIDS RELATE TO ANIMALS. Even the youngest campers can visualize a dog stretching after a nap,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], performiong DOWN DOG to maintain a healthy spine. It becomes a playful game. Doing a Stork pose, they instantly appreciate the patience and concentration it requires to stand on one leg. This translates to focusing at school. It become a playful game, a coping tool.
GRIEF CAMPS, with trained counselors, listen, give the child opportunities to express their feelings, in a peer friendly safe environment. The US Census Bureau states tha 1.5 million children are living in single parent households because of the death of a parent. One in twenty American kids under fifteen will suffer the loss of one or both parents due to death. YOGA is a pivotal activity for this healing GRIEF CAMP environment.
Children understand at about age six, that death is permanent. This is an upsetting concept. They worry "Who is next? Will it be Mama, Daddy, or me?" I watched my grandson, Noah, at a recent funeral, for signs of distress. He appeared unfazed by the loss of his maternal grandmother, who he saw frequently. Barely able to read, he began starting his morning with a bowl of cereal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a quick glance at the Obituary column. "Look who died" he would say, holding up the paper. How could I have missed this? Adults in the household may be coping with their own mourning process, and not be helping the child with truthful information, comfort, and opportunities to ask questions. Kids may "shove" their emotions, withdraw, act out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or feel responsible, guilty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], about a death. Studies show that adults who were unable to grieve as children are at risk for developing depression later in life.
2. THE BODY IS AN OUTER MANIFESTATION OF THE MIND. As emotions are felt, the body reflects them in mood and behavior. Our voices quiver, we feel a lump in the throat, or become breathless. Sadness is a "tissue issue". The body and mind are inseparable. We shuffle, bend forward to protect our hearts from further assault. Yoga acts directly on these postural habits of sadness. Poses that open the chest and throat are paramount in "unsticking" these universal symptoms of bereavement. These poses flood the brain with serotonin and the "feel good" hormones of the pituitary. Yoga breathing quiets the busy fronal cortex of the child's brain, slows the breath rate, and infuses the student with a sense of peace and calm. We call this "Time in," a place of tranquil respite.
"I loved Gramp," said one friend. "But I couldn't stand thinking about him being gone. I grabbed a ball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], went outside & tossed it around. Folks thought I was unfeeling, or that I didn't care. But, I did. I just couldn't stand the pain."

A baby in action-curious, energetic, reaching out to explore-embodies the inborn urge to grow, achieve, and excel. This motivation need not be taught,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but can be untaught or squelched. Peak performers prove that human beings are meaning-seeking organisms. We are not only born in a state of arousal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], excitation, and motivation, but we also seek to grow in a particular direction. What determines our direction? Passion and preference-an intense desire to do what we do. High achievers differ in what they call it-passion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], preference, deep feeling, or intense desire-but they agree that it determines their direction. They can trace their performance more clearly to a preference than to an aptitude, more to how they feel about what they are doing than what they know.
Understanding your Core Desires-and how they are the source of true motivation-will help you realize that you may be getting some greater benefit than what you say, or think, you want. For example,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you may remain at a job you dislike because you need to pay your bills.
During all this, John learned to understand how hurt his wife had been by not getting approval from her father. She remembered her father telling her, "I can't believe you're so dumb." Even after she got her bachelor's degree-in his specialty-and excelled in the business world, she felt she had never pleased him. All she ever wanted was his approval, but she never got it.
Inherent talent-an inborn predisposition-is the wiring in one's system that is unique to each individual. One can either identify and develop the specific talents and capacities he or she has, or leave them buried. Peak performers find compelling reasons to cultivate relevant inherent talents. Matching a mission to such gifts greatly enhances the possibilities of peak performance. What often
happens is that a vast reservoir of hidden resources becomes available for use.
John had very low self-esteem, and he tried to compensate for this by putting others down to build himself up. This behavior was motivated by a Core Desire to feel good about himself at any cost.
"How can you say that I am getting exactly what I want in life?" I challenged. I knew I didn't want the job, and yet I stayed there. Once I understood what my mentor was saying, I left the job. I have been working for myself ever since.
When John came to understand how hurt Carol had been as a child by the criticism of her father, he was devastated. He felt so much compassion for her he wept. With his new understanding of how criticism made her feel, he made a heartfelt decision never to be the cause of that kind of pain or anguish for her. From that day forward,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he was a changed man. Nothing else he had tried before had worked. The only thing that ended the years of criticism was when it became a heart-set. As much as he wanted to be positive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his mind-set just didn't have the force to make it happen.
Author's Bio:
Mind-sets can be accurate from a rational point of view but still be wrong. For example, a management professor at Yale University once responded to a student's proposal of a reliable overnight service that it was a "concept that is interesting and well informed, but in order to earn better than a C the idea must be feasible." Fred Smith went on to found the Federal Express Corporation. In the end, the professor's mind-set was wrong because his idea of what was feasible was limited. What is feasible, functional, possible, or proper to one person may be utter nonsense to a person who is working from the heart.
I took him to task because I could think of many things in my life that I never wanted to happen. At the time I was working at a job that was severely limiting and causing me great stress. The job was just one bad thing.
John married a wonderful woman, Carol, who grew up with an alcoholic father. Early in their marriage, Carol exhibited some of the characteristics common to adult children of alcoholics. In particular, Carol couldn't tolerate any criticism. Even the slightest hint of criticism was devastating to her. For twelve years John, who built himself up by putting others down, and Carol, who was so very sensitive, were at constant odds.
Your mind-set may be that you must be an extrovert to be successful. Although extroverts can be successful, so can people who do not like the limelight. Some of the most quiet, most laid-back people I have known are extremely successful.
Your mind-set may tell you that good s*x is what it takes to have a good and happy marriage. Although s*x certainly plays an important role, this is a very limiting mind-set. How you share your hearts is far more important than how you share your bodies.
Although John often said he would put an end to his criticism of Carol, the pattern persisted. John made it a goal to stop criticizing his wife and children. He even did daily visualizations and affirmations. Each morning, as John was showering,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he would repeat over and over, "I will not criticize my wife, I am a noncritical person, I love my wife and my children, and I will not criticize them." But each morning he would step out of the shower and find something to criticize in no time at all.
A mentor of mine once told me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "If you think that you aren't getting the things you want in life, you are wrong. You are getting exactly what you want."
John then redoubled his efforts, making even more positive affirmations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], putting notes all over the place to remind himself, to no avail. John's Core Desire to feel better about himself was greater than his commitment not to criticize. In their thirteenth year of marriage, John and Carol stumbled upon some luck. Carol was asked to go to the hospital to help her father through rehabilitation. The time had come for his family to tell him of the pain and sorrow that had resulted from his drinking; it was time for him to accept responsibility.
