I look forward to my next unexpected event and many more opportunities to spend quality time with those who are important to me and make my life more rewarding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
On this day, I rekindled something from those years of driving long distances on my own, for by the time I had reached home I had developed and set out a plan of action in my mind for one very important issue I had to deal with in the week ahead. Surprisingly after my long trip home I was mentality refreshed and energised, even though I was physically tired and knew that I would sleep well that evening.

As I set out on my early morning journey the only thing I could think about at that time was that no sooner had I arrived and then said my goodbyes, I would be on the road again to make the trip back home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in total a round trip of 900 kms in just on 10 hours. Although I was only to happy to make the trip,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the thought of such a long drive in one day was a daunting one, particularly as I was looking forward to that much required time to relax.
I am reminded of the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.'
Over the years I have come to realise that in life often events happen to challenge you and that they often don't reveal their real purpose at the time. As I was to discover over the next 10 hours, this was not to be the case on this occasion.
My eldest son,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Simon and a group of his good friends were heading off for a week at the snowfields, however, due to last minute issue with their transportation; I willingly offered to help out and provide the extra car that was required to ensure that everyone got to the drop off point near the snow fields, so that they could then enjoy their weeks break snow boarding and skiing.
What this unplanned trip to the snowfields had given me were two unexpected but very timely lessons, the first being that we all need to and benefit from spending quality time with our family, loved ones and friends. The second lesson was that a change in your environment, no matter how temporary, can in itself provide you with the opportunity to look at something from a different perspective and come away with a resolution, as well as be refreshed and energised.
When I was younger I did a lot of country driving on my own and I often used this time to think about big picture stuff as well as issues and challenges I had in my business or personal life, many of which would be clarified and to a certain extent resolved, during these lengthy times of solitude inside my car.
As we drove, Simon and I talked a little about his week's break and a host of what may have seemed unimportant and rather minor subjects, however, it was great to have this time with him as we very rarely spend five continuous hours in each others company, other than in the days when we played Saturday afternoon cricket together.
As I left to make the return trip back home, I had a strange sense of loneliness which quickly disappeared as I concentrated on driving through some very heavy early morning fog. Within an hour I was through the fog and had a clear open road ahead of me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I engaged cruise control and spent the next four hours listening to some of my favourite CD's.
The drive to our destination was punctuated with the mandatory refresher and comfort stops, an early morning breakfast in a highway petrol station that could be best described as filling but far from nutritious, the dawning of a new day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coupled with patches of fog, mist and light rain which typifies a winter's morning as you get closer to the snow fields.

7) Recognize triggers from the past. It’s all well and good to have preferences, but if you find yourself having a great deal of intensity about something, it’s probably a trigger from some unresolved thing in the past. Susan, for example became incensed when her husband wouldn’t make time to help her with something. Sure, anyone would want their partner’s help and not be pleased if they didn’t get it, but her strong reaction cued her that she had unresolved feelings from her past. (Her dad never helped her with things when she was young.) Once she recognized this, she was able to negotiate her need for help from her husband in a more charge neutral way.
5) Expect differences. People are always telling me how awful it is that they differ so much with their partner. But to me, differences are to be expected. After all, each of us is unique and sees things in our own inimitable way. And why not? To me, the problem isn’t the number of conflicts or severity of them, it’s how respectful we are in honouring them.
2) Be specific. We are all guilty of saying generalities, but really, they cause tremendous confusion because what you mean by a general statement like ‘being considerate’ may be entirely different than what someone else may mean. If you’re staring at the side of a pencil, it’s going to look long and narrow, but if you move 45 degrees so you’re staring at the lead end, it will look like a pinpoint. Perspective is everything. Being specific goes a long way to solve issues of perspective. People can argue forever about what being considerate is, but no can argue with a specific request like, “Could you clear the table and do the dishes every night without me asking?” That’s way more likely to get you what you want than, “Could you help with clean up?”
If we can truly respect what’s right for someone else, even if it’s the opposite of what’s right for us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we can create a win-win. Then the problem’s solved. Most of the difficulties that occur around differences is one person trying to convince the other to see things their way or to do it their way. But why should they?
4) Ask for clarity. Don’t be afraid to ask for more details. For example, if someone says, “Do you want to go running together?”, wouldn’t it be wise to find out how far, how fast and when before you give any indication as to whether you’d like to do this?
There are many others I could mention, but these communication tips will make your interactions with your partner clearer and cleaner. Try them out.
I remember taking a course in University on Family Conflict,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The professor told us something that shocked me. He said that healthy families have LOTS of conflict and that it’s the unhealthy families that don’t,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The unhealthy ones (like the family I came from) never argued because they weren’t strong enough to handle it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I can now see the truth in this.
6) Avoid ‘right’ or ‘wrong. Really, there is no right or wrong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], only one person’s perspective versus another person’s perspective. Using phrases like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “From my point of view,” will help you remember that. Or asking the other person for their point of view will also support this idea of perspective and each person’s right to have a different one.
3) Talk only about the present. It’s SO tempting I know,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but really,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leave the past behind. Even if your friend, partner, boss has not asked your opinion about something important on the last 5 occasions, still don’t mention it. “Would you like to hear my perspective now?” is an arrow pointing at the bull’s eye of now.
